Description:
  • Rent A Coder reminder: You MAY NOT post the final solution for this (and any) project before your bid is accepted and funds are fully escrowed. Anyone who does may have their account permanently suspended. However, you CAN post:
    • On programming projects: A prototype or functional demo...as long as source code is not provided.
    • On graphics projects: A watermarked and low-resolution version of the work.
I am looking for an accomplished R programmer in this "proof of concept" initial project. This project provides a fabtastic opportunity for an experienced R programmer to quickly earn themselves a good rating.

The purpose of this project therefore is twofold:

1). To provide a "proof of concept" R script which I can test on my machine.

2). To hopefully discover an experienced R programmer that I can work with on subsequent R based projects.

The requirement for this project is laid out below:

REQUIREMENT
============
A simple R script that shows using the RCurl package in a script to request data from a URL and scan the received data into an R table.

The data received from the URL will be in tabular form, and will be plain ASCII but compressed to save on bandwidth.
The data is likely to be several hundreds of thousands of rows long and will thus need to be continually added to table until all of the data is received.

Note:
This is a relatively trivial project that should take an experienced R programmer not very long to accomplish. part of the reason I posted this project was to find an R programmer who can help with other R related projects (from EDA to scripts to generate surface plots etc).

Documentation for the RCurl package can be found here: http://www.omegahat.org/RCurl/

Platform:
Linux (Ubuntu 9.10)

Deliverables:
1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.
2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition, as follows (depending on the nature of the deliverables):
a) For web sites or other server-side deliverables intended to only ever exist in one place in the Buyer's environment--Deliverables must be installed by the Seller in ready-to-run condition in the Buyer's environment.
b) For all others including desktop software or software the buyer intends to distribute: A software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.
3) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law. Buyer will receive exclusive and complete copyrights to all work purchased. (No GPL, GNU, 3rd party components, etc. unless all copyright ramifications are explained AND AGREED TO by the buyer on the site per the coder's Seller Legal Agreement).
  • All deliverables must be uploaded to Rent A Coder before the deadline(s) for this project...with no exceptions. If this contract makes it impossible for a competent person to do this, then do not start this project...but instead alert Rent A Coder of an un-arbitratable, illegal project.
  • Remember that contacting the other party outside of the site (by email, phone, etc.) on all business projects < $500 (before the buyer's money is escrowed) is a violation of both the software buyer and seller agreements. Rent A Coder monitors all site activity for such violations and can instantly expel transgressors on the spot, so we thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you notice a violation please help out the site and report it. Thanks for your help.
